Abstract

I give an introduction to the conceptual structure of quantum field theory as it is used in mainstream theoretical physics today, aimed at non-specialists (though presuming some familiarity with quantum mechanics). My main focuses in the article are (a) the common structure of quantum field theory as it is applied in solid-state physics and as it is applied in high-energy physics; (b) the modern theory of renormalisation.
