Abstract

According to the "Received View" concerning "identical particles" in quantum mechanics, quantum particles of the same kind are physical objects of a previously unknown sort, namely objects without identity. Against this Received View we will here defend an alternative analysis, according to which
a collection of ``identical particles that are in exactly the same state'' should rather be seen as one object, not consisting of individual parts. Under certain circumstances it will happen, though, that a particle picture becomes applicable. In these cases identical particles of the same kind turn out to be distinguishable and possess their own identity.
