Abstract

Pierre Duhem's notion of 'good sense' has attracted a significant interest in the recent literature on theory choice and the advancement of a non-rule governed solution to it. In this paper we present the properties Duhem attributes to good sense in different contexts and examine its current reconstructions advanced in the literature and their limitations. We develop a novel reconstruction of good sense, seen as a social consensus smoothing device, which we argue best fits the properties of good sense and explicitly cashes out the effect that virtues have on scientific progress. We discuss some possible objections for the social choice account and how they can be accounted for.
