Abstract
Current publications in sociology question its ability to explain what it considers an object without really
defining what it means to explain. This paper seeks to answer the following questions: What does explaining
consist in? What exactly is the meaning of this term related to science? Why and in what way does the
intention conveyed in the word have difficulty with its right to be, or its relevance, in sociology? How can one
conceive the explanation in operative terms? The answers presented here are first based on the nuances
brought by contemporary epistemology to the characterization of science associated with the three key
words that are describing, understanding and explaining. The analysis of a qualitative interview then illustrates
the operations under which explaining in this discipline becomes possible, so that it can be considered
a science, itself conceived as knowledge by object, concept and method.
