Abstract
This is an experimental paper that explores how the robustness/invariance of the causal chain linking an agent’s action and the outcome influences judgments of causal responsibility. It is shown that even if one controls for the extent to which the action raises the probability of the outcome, robustness still has an independent effect on responsibility judgments. These empirical results are consistent with the more normative proposals in Woodward, 2006.
