Mendel and Lederberg: The first steps towards classical and molecular genetics.
[Preprint]
Abstract
Gregor Mendel’s 1866 paper on hybridising peas introduced an experimental strategy and analytical method that are still used today; however the paper was less explicit on the reproductive cycle, which had only recently been established. When Joshua Lederberg discovered Escherichia coli’s sexual system, almost a century later, the reproductive cycle was well understood and Lederberg analysed his data accordingly - but he did not realise that E.coli uses a different system. This article looks into the difficulties that Mendel and Lederberg contended with, and concludes that abstract genetic data cannot give a definitive explanation of what goes on inside cells.
