Abstract

A number of philosophers working in values and science have recently called for more attention to the nature of value judgments. Following Douglas (2009) on the history of the value-free ideal, I think contemporary work in values and science can benefit from its history. So, I consider the recent calls from a historical perspective. I highlight underemphasized aspects of the relationship between views about the nature of value judgments and their role in scientific reasoning in the mid-20th century. In light of this history, I raise three questions about value judgments and outline answers drawing upon feminist philosophy of science.
