Abstract

The term ‘fringe’ is often used to disparage or dismiss a theory as unserious, or obviously false. This paper offers an analysis of fringe theories that remains neutral about their epistemic status, and argues that intolerance towards fringe theories is epistemically harmful to science. Many theories celebrated as mainstream were initially ridiculed and dismissed as fringe, which delayed important research. Objections to tolerance are also considered.
