Abstract
Scholarship on value-laden science assesses value engagement by what it does for science and its governance, setting aside civic goods arising directly from such engagement. I argue that this scoping rests on the assumption that such goods are not distinctive of science. I challenge this assumption with a case from participatory crop science, where women's empowerment emerged directly from engagement with value-laden dimensions of the research and uniquely depended on characteristics distinctive of science. If this is right, the value of value-laden science is greater than even its most forceful advocates recognize — and so are the demands for its governance.
