Abstract

“Standard emergentism” is commonly regarded as the canonical framework for conceiving of the different tenets of emergence. The view is also often unapologetically considered as mostly faithful to the initial intuitions that historically constituted the soil for the advent of the doctrine of emergentism itself. In this paper, we challenge that assumption by shedding a new light on the roots of emergentism. To this end, after outlining the core components of contemporary standard emergentism, we reconsider the goals, influences and commitments of early emergentism, with a specific focus on Lloyd Morgan’s doctrine of emergent evolution. We argue that, in its original form, emergentism was largely “non-standard”, particularly in light of its commitment to a productive conception of time. We conclude that one cannot reasonably claim an account of emergence to be continuous with early emergentism while also considering it under the standard view.
