Abstract

This note provides a summary of the meaning of the term ‘Superselection Rule’ in Quantum Mechanics and Quantum-Field Theory. It is a slightly extended version of a contribution to the "Compendium of Quantum Physics:Concepts, Experiments, History and Philosophy", edited by Friedel Weinert, Klaus Hentschel, Daniel Greenberger, and Brigitte Falkenburg, published by Springer verlag in 2009. This version is identical to arXiv:0710.1516v2 (the second version of arXiv:0710.1516) from May 2009 and extends the one of 2007, printed in the Compendium, by some brief mathematical discussions, in particular on the algebraic theory of superselection rules.
