Abstract

An often-voiced concern about emancipatory approaches to modelling human
kinds is that they are unlikely to reach their goals unless they rely on accurate knowledge of the kinds they target; knowledge, it is assumed, which can only be obtained by representing the kinds as accurately as possible independently of any particular social or political goal. We argue that this argument is problematic for several reasons. We show that even if the pursuit of emancipation should indeed rely on accurate knowledge about kinds, a merely representational approach is neither necessary nor sufficient to obtain such knowledge.
