Abstract
Following my emphasis on the healthy and pathological varieties of consciousness, this chapter defends the argument that any biological theory of consciousness must account for the gradations and varieties of consciousness both within and across species, i.e. phenomenological complexity. By discussing a series of possible experimental paradigms to assess the dimensions and gradations of animal consciousness, this chapter aims to remove any initial reservations to the possibility of advancing a Darwinian science of consciousness that removes humans from the centre of reference, as was the case with the Darwinian revolution in physiology and behaviour.
