Aims, Domains, and Models in Science.

Abstract
There is a common view of modeling in the philosophical literature that ties modeling tightly to theorizing. In this paper, I demonstrate that conceptual models and modeling strategies widen the suite of aims associated with modeling such that modeling cannot be unified by practices of theorizing. Using conceptual models, I advocate for a view of modeling that takes seriously domain-specific goals and how they interface with modeling strategies such that modeling practices resist easy unification.
