Abstract

Naturalistic social epistemology has gone mainstream, but two of its central methods, case studies and modelling, are poorly understood. Even though case studies and modelling can be seen as two distinct approaches to social epistemology, both can be seen as mutually complementary methods for investigating social mechanisms relevant to the epistemic functioning of science. We argue, therefore, that naturalistic social epistemology of science should be seen as continuous with theoretical social science.
