Abstract

I discuss epistemological perspectives on selected efforts to axiomatise physical theories. In the first half of this contribution I present some examples, most of them well known. In the second and more technical part, I focus on mathematical results, including more recent ones, that are relevant for axiomatic schemes of Special and General Relativity. This article is part of a book composed of elaborated lectures delivered in celebration of the 100th anniversary of David Hilbert’s 1917 Zurich lecture “Axiomatic Thinking".
